Very plug and play. It comes with 4 outdoor cameras that work both in day and night. The cameras are not really HD quality, but the picture is good enough. It does come with a recorder that has a hard drive already. It will stream to the internet to view remotely and send you emails when it detects movement or a camera going down). I would buy again in a heartbeat.

The product is easy to install and easy to operate. I had an installer pull all the wires through my attic and had no problem after that. However there are two design issues and some support issues that any potential buyer should be aware of:

    1) Each camera comes with a mount to which it is attached. The mount is attached to the wall. The cable attached to the camera goes outside the mount and is always exposed and needs to be made weatherproof. The rest of the cable goes through the hole in the wall and into the attic. In similar products by some other manufacturers the cable goes right through the mount and directly into the hole drilled in the wall and is never exposed and so does not require any weatherproofing.

    2) One end of the cable is connected to the camera and the other end is connected to the DVR. The two ends are not interchangeable and you have to be careful to pull the cable so that the right end goes on each side. My installer actually found this out after pulling the cable with the wrong connector on each end and had to remove it and pull it again in the right order. The installer told me that in other similar products the connectors are identical on each end and you don’t have to worry about wrong ends.

    3) The product comes with just one page of documentation: Quick Setup Guide. This is not a problem because I could download the entire user’s manual from their web site. However, the information provided in the documentation is not always very accurate and you have to learn yourself as you go. There is a toll-free phone number on the Quick Setup Guide but when I called it I was directed to their web site for support. There is no phone support.

    4) Zmodo support leaves a lot to be desired. The documentation says to send email to support@zmodo.com. I tried that but got no response. I then tried their chat session. The first time I asked a question on chat, I got a very unhelpful response in an email and not in the chat session. It was not much of a chat session! I tried the chat again and this time I could continue on the chat session itself and got my issues resolved. Note that the chat session seems to be the only way to get support.

    5) To monitor the system on your smartphone you need to download the app Zsight and there are a few different ways to register the system so that you can view the images on the phone. One of the ways, SmartLink, asks you to enter the router password. I noticed that as soon as I entered the password it immediately changed the first letter to upper case and my login always failed. My router password is all lowercase. Looks like this is a serious bug in their system and they need to fix it. I finally managed to register the system using ‘Search on LAN’.

Removing one star for their design flaws and one star for support issues.
